Application of Calcium Carbonate in Rubber BY:Lydia
Application of Calcium Carbonate in Rubber
Calcium carbonate, characterized by its abundant resources, low toxicity and pollution, high whiteness, large filling capacity, and low price, is widely used in the rubber industry and serves as the primary light-colored filler for rubber products.
Calcium carbonate is further classified into heavy calcium carbonate, light calcium carbonate, nano-calcium carbonate, modified calcium carbonate, etc. Different calcium carbonate products play varying roles in rubber products, and thus their application fields also differ slightly.
Heavy calcium carbonate + rubber
Heavy calcium carbonate is a commonly used powdered inorganic filler, characterized by high purity, high inertness, good stability, high whiteness, low oil absorption and refractive index, and good dispersibility. It has poor reinforcing effect in rubber products and mainly serves as a filler.
The mechanical properties of heavy calcium carbonate vulcanizate are inferior to those of light calcium carbonate and modified calcium carbonate vulcanizates. Its abrasion resistance and modulus at a given extension are also inferior to those of carbon black, clay, or silicate vulcanizates. Furthermore, the oversized particle size of heavy calcium carbonate particles can significantly reduce the physical and mechanical properties of the vulcanizate. However, its production cost is relatively low, and its use in combination with other reinforcing agents or fillers in rubber can adjust the properties of the vulcanizate and reduce production costs.
Heavy calcium carbonate is widely used as an inert filler for natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, latex, etc., and is suitable for the manufacture of shoe heels, shoe soles, flooring, rubber hoses, foamed products, molded products, and extruded products.
The best choice in rubber applications Based on the above analysis, the conclusion is very clear:
Rutile titanium dioxide is the most suitable and mainstream choice for almost all rubber products.
Outdoor rubber products: such as white tire sidewalls, car seals, rubber tiles, outdoor cables, sports field mats, etc. These products are directly exposed to sunlight, wind, and rain, and must use high weather resistant rutile titanium dioxide coated with inorganic materials such as aluminum, silicon, and zirconium to ensure long-term color stability and physical properties. The use of anatase type can lead to catastrophic early failure.
